Gestern Abend waren Eric Schmidt und Jared Cohen zu Gast in der Bucerius Law School in Hamburg und redeten mit Uwe Jean Heuser, Ressortleiter Wirtschaft DIE ZEIT, über ihr Buch „Die Vernetzung der Welt: Ein Blick in unsere Zukunft“.

Über die Qualität des Gesprächs an sich und die Moderationsleistung habe ich mich gestern schon genug aufgeregt, das bleibt euch an dieser Stelle erspart. Aber zumindest die Sketchnotes wollte ich euch nicht vorenthalten.

Neulichst bei einem sehr erquicklichen Gespräch mit Wolfgang und Björn kamen wir mal wieder aufs Thema Arbeit und warum in Herrgottsnamen manche Menschen im Dauerbeschwerdemodus über den eigenen Job verweilen und nie kündigen.

Das kann natürlich einerseits daran liegen, dass wir alle in Hamburg wohnen und wir von Agentur~~opfern~~angestellten umgegeben sind, die diesen Typus quasi erfunden haben. Oder an unserer eigenen Selbstverliebtheit und dem Glauben an Selbstverwirklichung durch Arbeit, Unternehmertum und Selbständigkeit.

Egal welchem Lebens- und Arbeitsentwurf man nun anhängt, diese Grafik sollte dabei helfen zu entscheiden, ob man noch am richtigen Ort zur richtigen Zeit ist.

A couple of years ago Ole from Bigger Picture already made a neat little series for visual thinking called “Snippet Learning”. This has now evolved into a full fledged online tutorial:

For the past 2 years we have experimented with a new format - Created communication and dialogue tools by drawing - AND filming. We are now proud to present our two latest videos. They aim at explaining our own field: Visual Thinking and Graphic Facilitation. They are short introductions to different aspects of our methodology. the first video explains 7 basic elements on how you can learn to draw almost anything when working with people.

Once you’ve watched that (and maybe even tried it yourself?), also check out video #2 on tools for graphic facilitation

What I especially like about these videos is the combination of explanation and drawing (which has proven to be really successful since The RSA teamed up with Cognitive Media for the Animate series back in 2010). Plus Bigger Picture is using real items moving in and out of the visual to support and emphasize the main points they’re trying to make.

Great job, fun to watch and I’m very glad to see people are pushing this format further. There’s a lot of power in using visuals to teach and explain complex matters and skills.

Off to Brussels later today to facilitate this meeting for Wikimedia. Preparing a graphic flow to give the group a visual guideline and big picture while they’re working. It’s a really good facilitation tool to keep everyone focused.

If you’re interested in using visuals for your meeting check out the Grove graphic guides, they’re an excellent starter.

Kleiner Einblick in die Visual Thinking Lessons:

Habe gerade eine Nachricht auf Xing von Stephanie bekommen, die bei den Visual Thinking Lessons letztes Jahr in der Good School dabei war.

Sie schreibt auf ihrer Website ein wenig über den Workshop, hat Bilder gepostet, die im Laufe des Tages entstanden sind und gibt ein wenig Einblick in die Methoden. Freut mich sehr, danke Stephanie!

"How to Draw 1000 Funny Faces" Cartooning Instruction from 1946.:

Stumbled upon this blogpost the other day. The book it talks about is ancient (1946!) and the pages are yellowed but that makes it just so much more charming. It’s neat little helper for quickly learning how to draw faces.

Funny add-on - someone ripped the accompanying record and made an mp3 out of it, so you can listen to the instructions while browsing the book. You can download all 14 pages of the “How to Draw 1000 Funny Faces” here.

Meine Lieblingsschule in Hamburg, die Good School, hat einen tollen Flyer für unsere nächsten Visual Thinking Lessons gebastelt. Hab mich total in die Illu verknallt (die nicht von mir kommt). Hirn mit Schnurrbart, Fliege, Röntgenaugen und Stiftarmen. Ganz ganz großartig, danke dafür.

Wir machen den Workshop in Zusammenarbeit mit der Page und als Teaser habe ich einen Artikel über Notizbuch- und Zeichenapps geschrieben, der in der nächsten Ausgabe erscheinen wird.

Am 16. April gibts dann die volle Ladung - von Basics des Zeichnens über Sketchnotes und Graphic Recording hin zum Methodenkoffer des visuellen Denkens und jeder Menge Tools für analoges und digitales Kritzeln. Lernen, wie man mit Papier denkt.

Visual thinking can be divided into a number of processes itself, including the analysis, manipulation, and creation of images. For example, when we read a map, we are using our visual thinking skills to discover where we are and where we want to go. Selecting appropriate colors for a bedroom or cutting and pasting clip art images into a presentation would also be considered visual thinking.

Handmade thinking, however, is a creative process, the drawing of new images by hand in order to respond to a specific experience or to show our thinking to others.

The conference theme, of Drawing Knowledge, attempts to engage with the twin questions of what constitutes drawing and what constitutes knowledge; of how knowledge authenticates drawing acts and how drawing might be constructive of knowledge.

The theme questions whether traditional epistemological schemes can be addressed through the agency of drawing or whether drawing challenges these schemes with a new vision of its own. The call suggested the following as starting points in the discussion, as possible themes, as prompts and as provocations:

Is drawing utilised sufficiently as a fundamental tool for thinking across disciplines? What cross-disciplinary case studies are there into the uses of drawing as a problem solving tool capable of generating and testing ideas? What role can drawing play at each stage of the design process, and in enhancing design thinking? How aware are we of conventions? How is drawing as an experimental approach and attitude distinct from drawing as an outcome and discipline (e.g. Frayling’s Research through Art and Design or Research for Art and Design*)? How has the practice of drawing in education changed, and how do we ensure its continued relevance in an increasingly digital age? Is the teaching of drawing distinct from the teaching of art and design, and what current role does it play?

Lovely little series on the Art of Rich Pictures by the Open University.

How can the drawing of images aid communication? How can they help us in business, in our everyday and personal lives? Rich Pictures is a term used to describe a means of communicating, expressing and discussing complex ideas through images. Although the term is primarily used in a modern business setting, the Rich Pictures concept is wide ranging and has evolved over thousands of years. They can be seen on ancient cave walls, are use primarily in therapy and they signal to us in globally understood icons. They are also a way to debate large and significant problems. This collection of films explores the concept of Rich Pictures and the many ways images have evolved into communication tools.

Moin moin,

es gibt Neues auf dem Buchmarkt. David Sibbet, Gründer von “The Grove Consultants” und grauhaarige Eminenz des visuellen Denkens, hat über Jahrzehnte angesammeltes Wissen in seinem dritten Buch verarbeitet. Nach “Visual Meetings” und “Visual Teams” gibt es nun “Visual Leaders - New Tools for Visioning, Management, and Organizational Change”. Ein Auszug aus dem Introtext:

“Visual Leaders shows how leaders can take full advantage of the visualization revolution and is a must read for anyone leading transformations within their organizations.”

Das Buch selbst kommt erst im neuen Jahr heraus, aber auf der Grove-Website kann man sich schonmal Inhaltsverzeichnis und Infografiken herunterladen (mit vorheriger Registrierung). Seine ersten zwei Bücher sind Standardwerke für alle, die ins Thema einsteigen wollen. Bisher bekam man viel Einblick in Sibbets Arbeitsweise, jede Menge Methoden und Beispiele, die einen gut dazu befähigen, das Gelesene auch gleich umzusetzen. Für Visual Leaders scheint er sein Erfolgsrezept wieder anzuwenden:

Gute amerikanische Businessliteratur, die man sich auch nebenher zu Gemüte führen kann.

Letzten Freitag die Grünen so: “Wirtschaftskongress”. Ich so: “Drei Meter Wandbild”.

Themen: Strukturwandel, Energiewende, digitale Wirtschaft, Mittelstand, Fachkräfte, unternehmerische Verantwortung, ökologische Modernisierung.

Mit dabei: Frau Künast, Herr Trittin und ganz viele Leute in Anzug. Das erste Mal bei den Grünen, dass ich gesiezt wurde :)

Together with a Norwegian colleague I started developing visual tools for facilitators working with meetings, processes and projects. If all goes well we should have the first ones ready sometime November or December.

The plan is to license some basic ones with Creative Commons (probably BY-NC-SA) so everyone can bring good and easy to use visuals into their work life.

We would love some feedback and people in organizations/freelance facilitators to try them out once they’re designed and uploaded. If you’re interested let me know, then I’ll keep you in the loop.
