1. A couple of years ago Ole from Bigger Picture already made a neat little series for visual thinking called “Snippet Learning”. This has now evolved into a full fledged online tutorial:

For the past 2 years we have experimented with a new format - Created communication and dialogue tools by drawing - AND filming. We are now proud to present our two latest videos. They aim at explaining our own field: Visual Thinking and Graphic Facilitation. They are short introductions to different aspects of our methodology. the first video explains 7 basic elements on how you can learn to draw almost anything when working with people.

Once you’ve watched that (and maybe even tried it yourself?), also check out video #2 on tools for graphic facilitation

What I especially like about these videos is the combination of explanation and drawing (which has proven to be really successful since The RSA teamed up with Cognitive Media for the Animate series back in 2010). Plus Bigger Picture is using real items moving in and out of the visual to support and emphasize the main points they’re trying to make.

Great job, fun to watch and I’m very glad to see people are pushing this format further. There’s a lot of power in using visuals to teach and explain complex matters and skills.

  2. Great insights by @chippwalters on how to use the ipad for graphic facilitation

Here’s a very helpful tutorial on how to use the neu.Notes app for graphic facilitation. Tried it out just now, especially love how you can

    • change the size and move what you’ve drawn and written
    • sharing (dropbox, yay!)
    • canvas sizes (huge plus)
    • easy adding of canvas pages, which is especially important during live graphic facilitation and recording

Could do a bit better on

    • colour palette
    • different brushes
    • overall design (feels a bit 90s to me, but oh well)

    Here’s Chipps demonstration:

Just looked for the tune pencil draw pro online, seems like they don’t sell it in Germany. Which is a bummer, cause I’ve been looking for a really good stylus for a while.

Also, I will be getting my new ipad on Monday, can’t wait to try out the new display. The old 1024x768 resolution has really been limiting the possibilities for scribing. Looks like that is about to change.

  4. I really quite adore that Nosferatu picture @ejeklint took of me at @jsconfeu

  5. Graphic recordings for Germany’s Green Party [in German]: Live-Visualisierungen Zukunftskonferenz / cc @maltespitz

MC, or “Mass Customization” - what is this all about and why might it matter to me?
Basically it is the use of a flexible production method or systems that support custom output. As a creative producer you might have a certain idea about the way your product or service should function or look like. What if a potential client likes your service or product in general, but needs it tailored to his or her needs in order to make use of it? Many creative businesses could increase their sales (and thus get out more of what they do) if they just knew how to adapt their production methods to different markets and clients.

Get More out of what you Do - Mass Customization for Makers
The MC for Makers workshop aims to help people in different fields of practice explore how they to get more out of what they do as a creative producer and how they can meet their client’s diverse and changing needs. If you want to explore how you as a creative can get more out of resources, technology, materials or changing paradigms you are most welcome. The goal of the Mass Customization for Makers Worskshop is to help you figure out how to profit from peer-production models that promise to give actual control over consumption back to the consumers.

  7. Interested in cultural and creative industries? kreativORTungen explores what’s happening (GERMAN)

After the Housing Forum in Budapest earlier this month I headed straight to Nuremberg to work with project leader Linn Quante on “kreativORTungen”, the second (and this time moving) conference on the cultural and creative industries.

    Some visual documentation:

We also had a TV team accompanying us:

  9. On the road - a quick recap of the last two weeks

The last two weeks have been insanely busy and there have been hardly any blogposts or tweets. So I thought I’d let you take a look at what happened.

The Wikimedia Chapters Meeting was held in Berlin in late March. Second time working with Wikimedia, always a pleasure!

Next stop Budapest in early April, being part of the fabulous two-person report-team with @nonformality. The ECA Housing Forum was initiatiated by Habitat for Humanity, Red Cross/Red Crescent, UNDP and UNECE. See the pictures in the second slideshow. There’s also a presentation you can check out on slideshare.

Then straight off to Nuremberg for Kreativortungen, a mobile conference on the creative and cultural industries. Also the second collaboration for project leader Linn Quante and me. Picture scans are in the making :)

And in the upcoming days: re:publica! Come say hi if you’re there, i’ll be doing live-recordings of a couple of sessions.
